Galileo is an angular oldstyle serif typeface derived from an early 20th century typeface of unknown origins. I designed Galileo while studying in Florence at the
Santa Reparata International School of Art, and named it after the famous Italian astronomer.
Before I began to draw this typeface, my professor
Alessio encouraged the class to seek inspiration from existing typefaces used in body copy from older books found throughout the city. I chose to source my typeface from a 1929 cartography periodical issued by Florence’s own
Military-Geographic Institute.
